Scratch News and Events

The national finals of the first Irish Scratch competition took place in IT Tallaght Dublin on May 22, 2010, to coincide with International Scratch Day. The day was a great success with a dozen students from around Ireland battling it out for the prize of €750.  This was awarded to Coláiste Chiaráin, Croom, Co. Limerick students Conor Foy and Matthew Mulqueen for their project “Ultimo Dance”, an impressive game and dance mat combination. In “Ultimo Dance” a player selects a dance character, music style and level of difficulty. The player must match falling arrows by dancing on the appropriate arrow on the dance mat. This game proves very challenging and exhausting when the “Mayhem” level of difficulty is selected.

Second prize was awarded to Alex Plunkett from Scoil Uí Mhuirí Dunleer, Co. Louth for “Avalanche”. Third prize was awarded to Eoin Rock and David Kelly from St. Clare’s Comprehensive, Manorhamilton, Co. Leitrim for “Star Wars”. Students Caoimhe Ní Rathallaigh and Ava Beatty from Scoil Bhríde, Ranelagh, Dublin received an honourable mention for their primary school entry “Stop Bullying”. All students that participated in the national finals qualified from regional competitions run in Leinster by IT Tallaght, in Connaught by IT Sligo and in Munster by Lero. The Irish Computer Society sponsored the prizes for the Scratch competition.
