Lero - Irish Software Engineering Research Centre

Scratch News and Events

The Computer Education Society of Ireland (CESI) and Lero  - the Irish Software Engineering Research Centre are engaging in an initiative to develop and roll out teacher training in the use of Scratch (a visual programming language) in the classroom, funded by NCTE. The course is scheduled to run on two Saturdays – October 1st and October 15th (Cork dates are October 1st and October 22nd and Sligo Dates are October 8th and 15th) in the education centres listed in the table below.

Course Content:
Each course will be lead by a teacher practitioner, who will indicate approaches used in class.

Day 1 will be devoted to mastering the basic programming steps and control blocks.  This will culminate with each participant creating an interactive game.

After the first day’s input, participants would have a fortnight to apply what they had learned and to complete a few programmes/games of their own.

The second Saturday would be devoted to troubleshooting, a “show and tell session”, a workshop on how they might use Scratch within their own schools and how they might form a local support cluster.

See www.scratch.ie for more details on Scratch in schools in Ireland.

Target Audience:
The course is aimed at all primary and post primary teachers interested in using ICT to promote learning in their classroom.

While no programming experience is required, it is expected that all participants possess basic computer and keyboarding skills

Course Aims & Objectives:
The aim of the course is to develop among teachers an understanding of Scratch programming language and an appreciation of how it can be used to aid teaching and learning in the classroom.
